Heavy rain, gales next week for South

Heavy rain and gales have been forecast for parts of the South from the start of next week.

The MetService said a slow-moving front was expected to deliver a cooler southwest change.

Rain was forecast about Fiordland and southern Westland during Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and there was moderate confidence of rainfall amounts reaching warning criteria during this time.

On Wednesday, the change to cooler southwesterlies was expected to deliver a period of heavy rain into Southland and Otago.

Northerly gales were also possible about exposed parts of the lower South Island during Monday and Tuesday, but the strongest winds were expected to remain offshore to the west.
