It may be a far cry from policing in the United Kingdom, but Milton's newest constable is enjoying the challenges offered by the town.

Constable Will Pentelow (32) served as a policeman in his home country of England for eight years, before moving to New Zealand in 2009.

He was based in Huntly, where he worked in the Strategic Traffic Unit (STU) for three years, before moving to Milton with his partner.

The unit works to reduce crashes and crash-related injuries and fatalities by focusing on reducing incidences of driving under the influence of drink or drugs, speeding and driving while fatigued.

The move south was prompted by a love of Otago.

"It's a beautiful part of the world - Dunedin is definitely my favourite New Zealand city."

With 11 years of policing under his belt, Const Pentelow appreciated the change the Milton station offered.

"It's a good community with good community spirit here.

"I'm definitely enjoying going back to general duties."

He said he also enjoyed working from a smaller station - Milton had only three police officers based there.

"You're kind of in charge of your own working day, it's great.

Policing is such a diverse job - there's no other job like it."

Police work continued to develop, with more emphasis on preventative policing, he said.

Intelligence-led policing meant officers were spending less time in the station and more time on the street, and had more involvement with schools and businesses.
