Tui Innes is hoping a SuperGrans branch will soon be established in Oamaru, allowing practical advice for day-to-day living to be passed on to people struggling with life.
Ms Innes, who is trying to set up the branch, said funding was coming in, but more was needed.
A board had been established and premises would be needed soon. SuperGrans is a service which allows people facing difficulties with daily domestic life to get practical advice from volunteers.
It has branches throughout New Zealand.
Ms Innes, a grandmother of six, said she had been told there were a lot of people in North Otago who desperately needed advice, and she was saddened there was a generation growing up which had noone to guide them.
SuperGrans volunteers worked oneon-one alongside a family or person teaching life skills, such as shopping for nutritional food and the preparation of basic meals.
‘‘There are people that don't know what a kumara is,'' she said. Ms Innes said there were a lot of retired people in Oamaru, with ‘‘wonderful'' skills'' and she hoped they would be keen to help once the branch was upand-running.
