Firefighters attended a gas leak in Orwell St, Oamaru, yesterday.

Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Fire Officer Pete Mason said crews were called to reports of the smell of gas about 11.15am.

Contractors had ruptured a redundant gas main and the area was evacuated as a precaution.

Firefighters stayed at the scene for several hours while the area was checked.

Waitaki District Council roading manager Mike Harrison said the gas pipe was not on any council records so there was no indication it was present.
