The 40th Kelly's Canter, the race up Puketapu near Palmerston, to be held this year on October 17 at 2pm, may attract more teams.
The police and the armed services had been invited to enter teams, convener Jim Chisholm said.
Every harriers club in the Dunedin area had been invited.
Mr Chisholm said it was hoped to expand the sponsorship for the race to increase the prizes.
If a police team does enter, it will provide a link to Constable Kelly, the Palmerston police officer who, more than 70 years ago, ran up Puketapu three times a week as part of his wartime coast watching duties.
He wore his police uniform trousers and boots on the runs.
A challenge for a crate of beer was withdrawn after one of his training runs for it was timed.
Kelly's Canter coincides with a market day in Palmerston.
