Community trust grants allocated

Four North Otago organisations were allocated $10,000 funding in total earlier this month in the latest Otago Community Trust (OCT) funding round.

The Oamaru Orwell Street Gospel Chapel received $2000; Oamaru Assembly of God $5000; North Otago Sports Bodies Association Inc $1500 and Waitaki Menzshed, $1500.

In total the trust allocated over $1.2 million to 47 recipients across Otago.

The OCT also recently announced the launch of the Rangatahi-Led Fund for the Waitaki and South Otago areas.

Grants are available for youth-led projects that benefit young people, with recommendations made by rangatahi for rangatahi (young people aged 15 to 24).

Otago Community Trust community engagement adviser Liz Harburg said rangatahi had bold visions for shaping the future and it was important to give them a seat at the table.

Last year, the fund’s inaugural year, it supported projects ranging from youth networking spaces and multicultural intelligence development, to all-ages events, and gatherings uplifting queer and gender-diverse rangatahi.

Oamaru-based Ellen McAtamney, part of the group that assesses applications, said they became involved in the fund because it was for the Waitaki region and "provides funds for practical things that we are going to see happen in the area for youth by youth".

Grants of up to $5000 are available.
