The extent of community consultation for the Oamaru Harbour master plan will be determined next week.

On Tuesday, Waitaki district councillors will decide how to move ahead with the development of a plan for the area.

Councillors will be asked to choose whether to approve an additional $180,000 in spending for ''a dual round'' of community consultation, $150,000 for a single round of community consultation, or $70,000 to update the Waitaki District Council's current 2011 harbour plan and present the updated plan to the public for feedback.

The funds would come from the council's Oamaru Harbour endowment fund.

The council had initially planned to update a 2011 harbour plan and bring it to the community for consultation, but late last year it issued a statement in which Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said the council had decided to ''change tack'' and broaden the scope of the plan before planning work began.

Councillors have also been asked to approve an Oamaru Harbour Space Masterplan Draft Establishment Report.

The draft report includes a timetable for the council's progress on the plan.

The council's harbour area committee, project team and ''informed participants'', are scheduled to discuss options for a plan by the end of next month.

At the end of April, councillors would confirm a shortlist of options and by the end of June endorse a master plan.
