Councillor queries Transit flood plan

Transit New Zealand needs to give a lot more thought to road closures in the event of flooding, Waitaki District Council assets committee chairman Alistair Mavor said yesterday.

With State Highway 1 blocked both north and south of Oamaru last week, although diversions were in place, he believed the community should be asking Transit what it was going to do about it, especially at the Deborah overbridge on State Highway 1 south of Oamaru, where a deep pond formed on the highway under the rail overbridge.

Lower Waitaki Plains ratepayers had also expressed concerns about the sort of traffic management plan Transit had when a road was closed.

Motorists were diverted down Seven Mile Rd when a lot of shorter bypasses could have been available, Cr Mavor said.

With the road closed between Pukeuri and Seven Mile Rd, there was no access to an area where many lived and worked.
