Driver charged after fatal crash

Police have charged a 29-year-old man with dangerous driving causing death, after a fatal vehicle crash south of Herbert on Sunday.

The man, who police had in earlier reports confirmed was a foreign national, is due to appear in the Oamaru District Court on December 8.

Craig Alan Chambers (39), of Motueka, died in the crash when his motorcycle was hit by an oncoming rental car near Waianakarua Rd, about 20km south of Oamaru.

Six other people were injured in the crash, in which police alleged the driver crossed double yellow lines on to the wrong side of the road in a rented Toyota Corolla before ploughing into Mr Chambers' motorcycle and two cars.

The driver was taken to Oamaru Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries, while the occupants of the two other vehicles involved - a Rural Post van and a black Nissan Tiida - sustained minor injuries.

The rental car driver's 31-year-old female travelling companion, also believed to be a foreign national, was trapped for more than an hour after the crash and was flown to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition.

On Tuesday, her condition was stable, but police were yesterday unable to provide an update on her condition.
