Winter codes wasted no time getting in and using the newly opened Network Waitaki Event Centre.

North Otago Netball played their senior club competitions in the new facility immediately following the mihi whakatau to open the event centre on Saturday.

The sport then returned the following day to host a regional under-16 tournament.

North Otago had two teams entered along with sides from Invercargill, Dunedin, South Otago, Eastern Southland and two teams from Central Lakes taking part.

North Otago Maroon went winless in pool 2 while North Otago Gold’s lone win came over Dunedin.

Basketball was next up as two high school matches were played on Monday night.

Waitaki Boys’ High School and St Kevin’s College senior and junior teams played each other as part of the Otago Secondary Schools competition.

Waitaki Boys’ were the victors in both games — the juniors won 71-42 while the seniors went to overtime before winning 79-74.
