Keen anglers both young and old were out in force last week for the opening of the sports fishing season.

In a statement, Fish & Game said its rangers counted 25 jetboats on the Waitaki River on Wednesday.

"Happy anglers were observed throughout the length of the river fishing from the shore and jetboats," it read.

"The river was relatively low, allowing shoreline anglers easy access.

"Most anglers that were checked on by rangers had hooked a fish during the day, with rangers observing some great catches of 1 to 1.5kg brown and rainbow trout."

Among the successful anglers were Stephen Brailsford and his stepson Harry Graham-Samson, of Christchurch.

The duo drove down to the Waitaki River and enjoyed a successful outing.

"We caught and released 20 fish between the two of us," Harry said.

"Most of the fish that we caught were in excellent condition, with the odd fish still recovering from spawning, but give these fish a few months and they will be back to being in prime condition." — Allied Media
