Help in sex abuse inquiry

Police investigating the alleged sexual abuse of 10 boys from Otago say the public have been coming forward to help with the investigation, in the wake of a public appeal for information about the activities of a Palmerston man.

Police said on Tuesday that they would like to hear from anyone who might have information about the activities of 71-year-old Leonard James Mulholland, who will appear in Oamaru District Court on January 29, to face 85 charges relating to 10 boys in Dunedin and wider Otago.

The alleged offending took place between 1980 and 2010, when the man was a washing machine serviceman in Dunedin, and although no more victims had come forward, Detective Warren Duncan, of Oamaru, said further information had been received.

''We have had a number of people contact us and some of the information they have provided has been helpful, but at this stage nothing has led to any more charges.

''We are interested if anyone has further information and that could be from witnesses or from a potential other victim.''
