Historic precinct inspires woodcuts

Damien McNamara has always been fascinated with both Oamaru's historic buildings and the Victorian era.

When Mr McNamara (26) was a year 12 pupil at St Kevins College in 1998, he did a woodcut of the Criterion Hotel which took about 50 hours.

Virtually 10 years to the day since he finished that woodcut, he has completed another of the Connell and Clowes building, next to the hotel, which used to house his parents' antique and curio business.

Now he had completed those two, the butchery worker was looking at doing woodcuts of the clock tower and the court house.

He has also been in touch with the Grainstore Gallery about having an exhibition during the town's Victorian heritage celebrations in November.

He drew a picture in reverse on customwood which was then carved out and the design printed on to calico.

The town's historic buildings were ideal subjects as there was such a large collection and so many different designs ranging from simple to elaborate.

Continuing the Victorian theme, Mr McNamara is also a keen penny-farthing racer and hopes to compete in the national penny-farthing championships in November.
