Drivers need to stay alert or risk injuring other motorists, Waimate police say.
Between Saturday and Tuesday there were five potentially serious crashes on roads around the Waimate district.
Constable Paul Alden, of Waimate, said the crashes could have been avoided had drivers paid attention.
"There's one thing harming yourself, but it's something else injuring other people, families and children.''
People needed to drive to the conditions and at a speed where they could slow down if they had to.
On Tuesday at 7.20am, just south of the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 82, a car crossed into the path of a southbound vehicle and the two vehicles collided No-one was injured and inquiries were continuing.
On Monday night, a 41-year-old Dunedin man was processed for drink-driving after crashing his car on SH1 near Makikihi.
He was heading north and his vehicle drifted over the centre line, causing a car that was pulling a horse float in the other lane to swerve.
The man was found to be three times over the drink-drive limit.
On Sunday about 2pm, a car travelling north on SH82 near the SH1 intersection crossed the centre line and crashed into a fence on the other side of the road, coming to rest upside-down. The 20-year-old female driver received a warning for careless driving. She told police she had swerved to avoid a cat on the road.
About 10.30pm on Saturday, a 40-year-old Oamaru man was processed for drink-driving after his car ended up in a ditch. His breath-alcohol level was 829mcg.
Const Alden said the man had stopped on SH1, near Otaio, for a toilet break, failed to put the handbrake on and the car rolled into a ditch.
Earlier that day, about 6.15am, a car turning from a Waimate back road on to SH1 collided with a car going south on SH1. No-one was injured. The driver was fined for failing to give way.
