KiwiRail happy to meet kindy request

KiwiRail could not resist a "super cute" request from children at Maheno Kindergarten (pictured) and last week one of its trains slowed as it passed the North Otago town, causing a sensation among the 2 to 4-year-olds.

The children at the kindergarten "love trains" so much they enlisted the help of their teachers and wrote a letter to "to the train driver" at KiwiRail who passes by about 1.45pm every day, Maheno Kindergarten head teacher Tessa Fifita said. She was shocked when she received a call "straight away".

"We can’t see the train from our kindergarten but it is quite close and we always hear you," the children wrote.

"We love trains and we were wondering what your horn sounds like. If you are allowed to, would it be possible for you to blow your horn for us one day?"

And on Thursday last week teachers took the children to a place where they could not only hear the train but see it pass by.

The train driver slowed right down, waved to the children, and blew the horn about five times. KiwiRail shared a video of the children waving to the train on Sunday, and it has been viewed nearly 10,000 times.
