Teschemakers artist Sr Mary Horn  prepares  to mark her 80th birthday in art.

Sr Mary will celebrate her birthday on October 17 surrounded by friends and family at her studio and home at Teschemakers, Kakanui. An exhibition of her art at Oamaru’s Forrester Gallery will run from October 21 to December 3, shedding light on work produced from 1993 to 2017. Sr Mary said she believed she owed a debt to the Forrester Gallery  and its former director, Warwick Smith.

The first piece of work she produced which went into an exhibition was not up to standard, she said, and it was only because Mr Smith thought Sr Mary had potential that she was given a shot, she felt.

"Warwick put on exhibitions of my work when I didn’t even have money to frame them. We just pinned them on the walls."

Highlights from her years of work included being involved in a protest exhibition against Meridian’s Project Aqua and she was the only New Zealander selected to produce artwork for the closing ceremony of the 800-year jubilee of the Dominican Order at the Santa Sabina Basilica in Rome in November 2016.
