Holiday-makers can expect to see a police presence in the Waitaki Valley lakes area over the next few days.
Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy, of Oamaru, said more police staff had been allocated to the summer hot spot, based out of Kurow.
This was to ensure an on-the-ground and visible presence through the busy post-Christmas-New Year period.
In particular police would be keeping an eye on boat traffic around safety to make sure people exercised patience when out on the water.
Snr Sgt McCoy said the Waitaki police subdistrict also took in the Waimate lakes side of the Waitaki Valley this holiday period.
He said several thousand people were expected to fill the area.
"The population increases up the lakes — we want everyone to have a good time. Respect fellow campers."
With busier roads in the area people should drive "with patience".
Snr Sgt McCoy also urged partygoers to be responsible and make a plan to get home without driving after their celebrations.
