Mulling options for Haven St

The Waitaki District Council will talk with people from Moeraki about options for troublesome, community-built Haven St after major damage to the road occurred during last week's downpour.

Council spokeswoman Alena Lynch said Haven St was closed late last week because the rain and subsequent cracks made the road impassable.

It reopened on Thursday.

A council spokeswoman said subsequent land movement in the area exposed a sewerage pipe and the part of the town's Millennium Walkway which runs parallel to the street had to be closed.

Mayor Gary Kircher said hundreds of thousands of public dollars and an untold number of volunteer hours had gone into the road.

When asked if the council would continue to pump money into the maintenance of the road, he said what the future held for the road would come down to discussions with the local community and all options would be examined.

The community-built section of the road was problematic, he said.

``It's always going to need work, there's no backing away from that.

``We've been accepting of that, but we've just got to work around with those options.''

Haven St was closed to through traffic in August 2013 when heavy rain collapsed a 400m section.

In 2015, the Otago Daily Times reported Mr Kircher opened the ``million-dollar reconstruction'' of Haven St, six months after the community started repairing damage done by slips which closed the road.

One of the key figures in the community-built road project is Bill Pile.

Mr Pile said the council should keep putting money into the site.

``Since the road was done by the community, three houses have been sold due to the road.''

Moeraki restaurateur Fleur Sullivan said the town coped with the closure, but it was disappointing the road had to shut.

``Realistically the road was always going to need ongoing maintenance because it's always needed maintenance.''

Moeraki Beach Motels partner Anne Brown said the road must be maintained for local businesses and the travelling public.

Unless the council planned to improve the safety of the alternative route, Tenby St, than Haven St must be kept open, she said.

A council spokeswoman said temporary repairs had been made to the sewer main and more permanent repairs were done yesterday. However, there were still multiple fissures, uprooted trees and uneven ground.
