Mystery meteorite at school

Excitement levels at Ardgowan School were out of this world yesterday.

Pupils arrived at school to discover police had cordoned off a section of the back field where a smoking "meteorite" had landed.

Principal Ryan Fraser said it was unbelievable timing for a "meteorite" to land on the school grounds on May 4 — Star Wars Day — and just as pupils were about to start learning about "our place in space".

"It was really exciting for us as a school and for all the kids to have that experience," Mr Fraser said.

Mr Fraser told pupils he heard a "bang" early yesterday morning, and asked the police to visit after he discovered the "meteorite" about 7am.

Constable Neil Rushton taped off the area, and the Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade also assessed the scene.

Mr Fraser also contacted St Kevin’s College science teacher Aidan Haig, who visited the school to talk to the pupils about meteorites and to explain how it might have got there.

Some pupils wondered why the "meteorite" smelt like "burnt toast", while others asked if they could take a piece of it home.

It was suspected it might be the work of aliens, while others were not convinced it was real at all.

Mr Fraser said while an alleged "meteorite" landing at Ardgowan School could be seen as beyond the realms of possibility, he hoped the experience had sparked the pupils’ interest in science.
