Waitaki District Council road safety co-ordinator Elton Crane holds a new poster promoting safe transport options.

The council is providing the posters to be displayed at 14 bars and restaurants around the district.

The posters encourage patrons to use courtesy vehicles to get home safely after drinking.

Mr Crane said he wanted to see the use of courtesy vehicles become part of the culture in the district.

''People going into these bars should notice them and then it's a bit of a reminder, as much as anything else, to plan your journey,'' he said.

''Even if that night they don't need [a courtesy vehicle], they would know it would be there for future use.''

Several places set to display the posters were in rural areas, where Mr Crane expected the use of courtesy vans would be becoming ''more and more prevalent'' following the lowering of the legal breath alcohol limit last year.
