Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton took part in the opening yesterday of Idea Services-North Otago's new centre in Severn St.

The service for people with disabilities has returned to almost where it began in central Oamaru at the Middle School - now part of Oamaru Hospital - in Severn St on June 7, 1963.

Its new centre is opposite the old Middle School building, next to the Oamaru police station.

In 1970, the then IHC-based service shifted to a purpose-built complex in Sandringham St, north Oamaru, which is now being offered for sale.

Manager Rowena Hutton said the shift back to central Oamaru corresponded with a change in the type of services being offered.

It also gave better access for the 45 staff and about 50 service users, and to employers and facilities such as the Aquatic Centre and Oamaru Public Library.
