A safety audit has doubled the cost of building a waste disposal station for camper vans and caravans in Oamaru.
However, despite the cost increasing from $9500 to almost $20,000, the Waitaki District Council's assets committee this week approved the project.
It is hoped to have the station ready by Christmas.
Assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said the the facility had been discussed for years.
The council had tried to find a site in Oamaru that was easily accessible, could take large vehicles, and was far enough away from houses.
It had been "extremely difficult" finding a site that met all the criteria but also had a sewer and water supply.
The council had settled on a site just north of the railway station on Humber St, near the Usk St intersection.
But a safety audit carried out on the site showed the council's initial plan to have vehicles park next to the kerb was not acceptable.
Instead, the station would have to be behind the kerb, which had added to its cost.
Mr Jorgensen said the extra funds would come from the roading budget.
Having the facility in Oamaru was also expected to encourage more people to stay.
Mr Jorgensen said a recent caravan rally had gone to Waimate instead of Oamaru because no waste disposal station was available.
