The third annual hazardous waste amnesty will be held this weekend, giving residents the opportunity to clean out their cupboards, sheds and garages.
Queenstown Lakes District Council solid waste manager Stefan Borowy said the event had proved beneficial for the community, given the number of everyday materials that should not be disposed of in landfills.
Hazardous waste includes glues, paints, cleaners, chemicals, fertilisers, fats and oils, fluorescent light bulbs, circuit boards, aerosols and lighters.
"The amnesty gives everyone who may have these types of products lying around the opportunity to get rid of them safely." About 1190kg of hazardous waste which would normally have ended up in the landfill, or been dumped illegally, was handed in during last year's amnesty.
Mr Borowy said residents with household hazardous waste could bring along items and dispose of them free of charge. However, there would be a charge for amounts more than 50kg.
The material would be collected by Transpacific Industrial Solutions which would ensure all materials were processed and disposed of safely, without damaging the environment.
Material can be brought to the Frankton Transfer Station from 10am to 4pm on Friday and Saturday.
