A month after traffic-calming humps were constructed across the Crown Range Rd at either end of Cardrona, they are being removed.

Queenstown Lakes District Council general manager infrastructure and assets Erik Barnes said yesterday the ''thresholds'', made from river stones and exposed aggregate, would be replaced by a smooth road surface.

The decision was made after concerns were raised about the potential impact of the humps on motorcyclists and cyclists.

Residents of Cardrona spoken to by the Otago Daily Times yesterday were concerned they would be left without anything to slow speeding vehicles.

Cardrona Hotel co-owner Cade Thornton said the town needed something although he did not think the humps installed by the council were ''the right thing''.

''I think the issue has been there was not enough signage to show they were on the road and a lot of people were hitting them at speed and getting quite shaken up.''

Mr Thornton said he thought the devices were ''too abrupt'' and he heard tradesmen were not happy with them because everything fell out of the shelves in the backs of their vans.

Cyclists and motorcyclists had also not been happy with them - particularly the one on the hill at the Queenstown end, he said.

Past chairman of the Cardrona Residents and Ratepayers Association Sam Lee said motorists needed to be reminded they were entering a town.

The humps gave them a sense of arrival and that they should be travelling at a maximum of 50kmh.

Mr Barnes said the decision to remove the devices was made after the council's standard post-construction audit and public feedback.

One of the two humps had been removed by Wednesday and the other was expected to be gone by the weekend, with the road resealed next week, depending on the weather.

Another ''more suitable'' use has been found for the humps, Mr Barnes said.
