Lakes District Council deputy mayor Lyal Cocks says the idea for a ''commercial interactive facility'' focusing on Wanaka's history is being discussed.
''I know there are some private proposals around at the moment. One, in particular, is looking at that.''
Cr Cocks said the proposal was to project the history of the Upper Clutha ''in a way people would interact with''.
It was in the very early stages and Cr Cocks was unable to provide the Otago Daily Times with further details.
Cr Cocks said the idea of a museum in Wanaka had been ''talked about a lot'' over the years and Cardrona was ''pushing strongly'' for some sort of museum there.
''The whole thing of building and managing a museum is not a simple thing, if you do it properly.''
Cr Cocks believed museums were best established in conjunction with some other activity, such as a library.
