Participating this coming Monday in a Cancer Society golf endurance fundraiser, The Longest Day, is a Queenstown team including highly-promising 16-year-olds Yoonae Jeong and Ricky Kang.

‘Team Queenstown’ — also comprising Queenstown Golf Club (QGC) training professional Liam Douglas and Callum White, who’s on the golf operations team at Arrowtown’s Millbrook Resort — will play Millbrook’s 36 holes, Arrowtown golf course’s 18 holes and then 18 holes at QGC’s Kelvin Heights course.

Yoonae last month reached the final of the New Zealand Amateur in Auckland and set the women’s yellow-tees record at Kelvin Heights during the Skyline Charity Classic.

She and Ricky also teed up for Otago last week at the NZ interprovincials in Christchurch.

The idea for Team Queenstown arose from a chat between Douglas and Ricky’s dad, Moon Seok Kang.

Douglas says the cause is close to his heart as he lost a friend back in England to bowel cancer last year, after a long fight during which he also raised awareness and funding.

He’s also got a strong passion for growing the game of golf.

"I was once a junior and I know what it was like, and seeing Ricky and Yoonae do really well is great so I thought doing it with them would be a cool thing for myself, the club and hopefully for them."

So far the team’s raised just over $1000.

"It would be nice to get at least $2000, if not a bit more."

Three local restaurants — Hikari Japanese, Kimchi Korean and Cody’s Chinese — are also supplying the team with, respectively, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
