'Four seasons in one day' for triathlon

Queenstown man Thijs Hubber was the overall winner of the Jacks Point Triathlon on Saturday, clocking in at 1hr 7min 6sec.

The open triathlon winner was Johanna Jackson, of Gore, in 1hr 23min 46sec. Gary McGill, of Queenstown, won the duathlon open in 1hr 23min 35sec, while the female winner was Sarah Cole, of Queenstown, in 1hr 15min 47sec.

Hayden Finch, of Arrowtown, won the male "Du It" challenge in 52min 54sec and Paula Costello, of Queenstown, won the female "Du It" challenge in 49min 52sec.

Janus Staufenberg, of Wanaka, came first in the boys' triathlon in 38min 40sec, while Fiona Gray, of Winton, crossed the finish line at 49min 29sec in the girls' category.

Darren Blackhurst, of Arrowtown, won the 5km dash in 19min 25sec, while the female winner was Yvonne McDonnell, of Cromwell, in 22min 49sec.

Race director Adrian Bailey, of Queenstown, said the 181 competitors from the South braved "four seasons in one day", which "just made it more interesting", one junior entrant told him.

The triathlon involved a 500m swim in Lake Tewa at Jacks Point, followed by twice around the estate on sealed roads for a 20km road bike race, then a 5km off-road run back around the lake.

Top multisport athlete Robert Huisman, of Invercargill, competed in the category-winning Team Lexus and is expected to race in Challenge Wanaka on Saturday.

The next Active QT multisport event will be the Paradise Triathlon on February 19.
