Globetrotting Hawea pig does a runner

Little pig Toot has had a hoot all over the world, but now he has gone missing on a simple trip between Hawea Flat and Dunedin, to the dismay of owner Luke Dyer.

Mr Dyer (30), a teacher at Hawea Flat School, said the soft toy had been his constant companion since 2006, when he was teaching at Kaikoura Primary School.

Since then, the class mascot had attended five schools, including an international school in China.

Toot had travelled to four continents and 13 countries with Mr Dyer or his pupils, with his perspective on the world recorded in a photo diary.

"[He has] walked the Great Wall of China, travelled by train over the Swiss Alps to Italy, visited Cape Canaveral and met an astronaut, minded the gap on the London Underground, Disneyland-ed in Paris and Florida and Hong Kong - and now on a simple trip from Hawea to Dunedin he has disappeared."

Mr Dyer has been teaching year 1 and 2 pupils at Hawea Flat School for a term and was recently appointed to a permanent position.

He has been teaching for about seven years and says a classroom mascot is a useful friend to have during geography lessons.

"I think he's a bit different. He gets us looking at the map and sharing stories."

Since arriving at Hawea Flat School this year, Toot has travelled to Fiji and Wellington.

His trip to Dunedin on Thursday last week was his third excursion on behalf of Hawea Flat School and the family he was travelling with was "feeling guilty" he had gone missing, Mr Dyer said.

"There is a possibility that he did not re-enter the car after a rest stop in Roxburgh or maybe stayed in Dunedin. He is gone and my class and I really want him back," Mr Dyer said in a plea to the Otago Daily Times yesterday.

So if anyone has seen a little stuffed pig wearing a grey sunhat and a yellow jumper with Toot in blue letters across the front, please contact the Otago Daily Times on (03) 443-1307 and we will put you in touch with Mr Dyer.
