Persistent rain did not dampen a busy morning for stallholders at Arrowtown's 15th annual market day.

The event raises funds for the Lakes District Museum-owned town post office.

Museum board member and market organiser Ann Bain said about 600 people passed through yesterday.

The event raised $2500 for the post office.

The amount exceeded expectations and will go towards installing a heat pump in the historic building.

"There were lots of people and we had lots of fun," Mrs Bain said.

Stallholders finally succumbed to the inclement weather about 2pm, but the Village Green's Cork Elms did an admirable job of providing cover as the rain got heavier after lunch.

"I'd like to thank the stallholders and the people who came to the stalls," Mrs Bain said.

Museum director David Clarke said stall space had sold out and a "great atmosphere" permeated proceedings.

He said it was only the second time since 1995's inaugural event that the market had been rained off.
