Racing for charity

Twelve corporate multisport teams battled difficult terrain and demanding weather near Queenstown as part of efforts to raise $170,000 for Cure Kids this weekend, organisers say.

This year's South Island Cure Kids Great Adventure Race saw competitors running, cycling and using their orienteering skills to navigate from Coronet Peak to Arrowtown, up Macetown Rd to Glencoe Station, before hitting the Crown Range and Mt Betham and returning to Arrowtown.

Rain on Saturday afternoon made the bike sections particularly muddy and challenging, meaning times were down on last year's.

Nestle NZ, of Auckland, took first place in a time of 8hr 8min, followed by second place H.G. Livingstones, of Christchurch, in 9hr 10min, and third place Arrow International, of Queenstown, in 9hr 12min.

Colliers International, of Christchurch, won the champion fund-raising title after raising $30,000 in the months leading up to the event.

Together, the teams raised $170,000 in sponsorship deals, which would go to the Cure Kids charity and support medical research for children's illnesses.
