While thousands have flocked to Queenstown to celebrate the 2008 American Express Winter Festival, which began on Friday, this morning there will be a celebration of a different kind on the Remarkables.
Following a week of cold temperatures and some natural snow, the Remarkables skifield announced late yesterday afternoon it would be opening today for the 2008 season.
Yesterday, staff recorded a base of 45cm at the top of the mountain and 10cm at the bottom - enough snow to open, even though the area would be offering limited facilities until more snow arrived.
Ski area manager Ross Lawrence said it was still "early days" but the staff were looking forward to a great winter.
Early risers this morning would be treated to a complementary glass of Lindauer, with five features operating in the Terrain Park.
More features would be opened as more snow fell, Mr Lawrence said.
