Almost a third of New Zealanders consider the Queenstown Lakes area to be the most romantic destination in the country, a survey shows.
A total of 29% considered the southern lakes area of Queenstown, Arrowtown and Wanaka to be the best place for lovebirds to flock, followed by the Coromandel (13%) and Hanmer Springs (9%).
Gisborne and the East Cape were voted the least romantic, according to the latest Valentine's Day survey by Durex. The survey polled more than 1000 New Zealanders over the age of 18, 64% of whom were living with their partner.
Two-thirds of couples (64%) said they are not doing enough to keep the ''magic'' alive in their relationship.
Half of the respondents chose fine dining and a night at a hotel as their idea of the perfect date, while other popular date choices included the traditional picnic and walk along the beach (25%), or dinner followed by a film (19%).
Dates which involve an outdoor activity were the least popular choice for a date (5%) while a home-cooked meal and a night in without the children came second-to-last (12%).
