Popular Queenstown neighbourhood Arthurs Point will at last have a convenience store following the sale of the former Gin Garden hospo business.

New owners, Queenstowner Cam Mitchell, who has high-end venues The Bunker and, in Arrowtown, Hyde, and long-time local Mike Stewart will open The General Kitchen & Bar in the front of the premises and The General Store, including a "boutique" liquor store, at the back.

Arthurs Point’s lacked a store since the campground one shut down.

The fact Gin Garden had an off-licence as well as an on-licence was "a big attraction", Mitchell says.

"I’ve always wanted to do something local because everything I’ve done over the past years has been premium — I just wanted something that’s a bit more approachable to a wider demographic."

The General Kitchen & Bar — initially opening Wednesday till Sunday for lunch and dinner — will serve mainly pizzas, thanks to an existing pizza oven, burgers and fish and chips.

"It’s simple, but sophisticated," Mitchell states.

Stewart, meanwhile, says Arthurs Point "definitely needs a general store".

With the neighbourhood’s growth in both locals and visitors, and the venue’s proximity to the new bike trail and Coronet Peak skifield, both owners believe they’ll only get busier and busier.

They say their venue will open either just before Christmas or the week after.
