Ministry of Education (MoE) appears receptive to extending Wakatipu High for a second time to deal with looming capacity constraints.

That’s according to board chair Adrian Januszkiewicz, whose board’s asking the ministry to extend the school to lift maximum student numbers from 1625 — the limit after the first extension — to 2000.

The issue’s pressing because the school roll — which sat at 1436 early last month — is likely to reach capacity by or about 2027.

"What we’ve been told is they are now working towards a masterplan where we will expand the school from current capacity of 1625 to 2000.

"And the timing of that is dependent on the prioritisation of financing and future budget rounds.

"And they’ve told us it may be delivered in stages."

In tandem with this, MoE is also working on land purchasing options for a second high school, Januszkiewicz says.

"We are pleased our analysis is now aligning with that of local ministry staff and that the exigency [or urgency] of our situation is being recognised.

"Our fate now lies with funding prioritisation announcements to be made next year ... "

Contacted for comment, MoE media manager Matt Huntington says "we’ve nothing further to add".
