The new Queenstown Airport chief executive’s starting salary is $576,000 per annum.

In response to an Official Information Act request, airport sustainability and corporate affairs general manager Sara Irvine said new chief executive Shane O’Hare, who will get his feet under the desk next month, will also be eligible for an annual incentive payment.

This payment "is at risk, and will be considered by the board at the close of each financial year", she said.

"This will be linked to company and individual performance targets set by the board."

Based in Australia, where he has been the chief executive of Tasmania’s Launceston Airport, Mr O’Hare has over 40 years’ experience in the aviation and tourism sectors, having held various senior executive positions globally, including at Melbourne Airport and Qantas Airways.

His appointment was confirmed in May.

His predecessor, Glen Sowry, finished up in June.

The airport board also commissioned an independent report from Strategic Pay on the complexity and size of the position, along with "approaches that could be taken to a competitive salary".

Mr Sowry’s starting base salary in 2021 was $490,000, with the potential to earn another $80,000 per annum in bonuses.

The airport’s annual report, released yesterday, shows he earned between $750,000 and $760,000 last year.
