A luxurious Queenstown lodge has been booked for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to have a romantic royal escape.

UK website Mail Online this week published photos of the exclusive Matakauri Lodge and reported Prince William and Kate will stay there during their New Zealand tour next month.

The news site claimed the Owner's Cottage - usually $12,000 a night - had been secured for the same price as a local hotel room.

To protect the couple's privacy, the entire lodge - including four suites and six villas - had been booked for the night.

Stephen McAteer of Matakauri Lodge told the Herald on Sunday the lodge could not disclose any information about guests and would neither confirm nor deny a royal booking.

The resort is on the banks of Lake Wakatipu and boasts uninterrupted lake and mountain views. It is one of Tatler magazine's 101 Top Hotels in the World.

A stay there includes breakfast and dinner.

The Owner's Cottage has a private balcony with views across the lake and mountain range from a jacuzzi. Even the bathrooms have breathtaking views.

Prince George is coming to New Zealand with his parents for the 10-day visit from April 7 but will not be staying in Queenstown.

The Mail reported the couple would arrive at the lodge after wine-tasting at the Amsfield vineyard and jet-boating on the Shotover River. They would fly to Christchurch the next day, then later be reunited with George, who will stay at Government House in Wellington.
