Working alongside Queenstown Lakes District Council representatives, members of the Hawea Community Association (HCA) have formulated a draft action plan to create a safer, active environment.
The draft plan has identified the Hawea Flat triangle, which is an area bordered by Kane Rd, Camphill Rd, and St Ninian's way.
The rural community of Hawea Flat is centred on this triangle of land, which contains the local primary school, kindergarten, pre-school, a church, and the township hall.
A new BMX track has recently been built between the school and kindergarten, and is proving popular with local youngsters.
The first term of the primary school year started today.
HCA president Rachel Brown says the draft action plan includes several potential engineering and education measures to help improve road safety and to influence vehicle operation around the St Ninian and Camphill Rd area.
"The broad aim of the project is to facilitate accessibility in the Hawea district in terms of safer walking and cycling, and to ensure local centres are well linked to the communities they serve."
The draft action plan is being circulated to Hawea residents, and the HCA and council are seeking comment or further suggestions about its implementation.
The draft plan can be viewed on the QLDC website or obtained from members of the HCA.
