Queenstown Lakes District Council is inviting the community to celebrate the official opening of the new skate park in Queenstown Gardens on Sunday, December 7.
Construction of the park began in February with completion of the plaza in June and the bowl this month.
The finished park includes a skate plaza featuring banks, ledges, gaps, rails and other urban features and a bowl with three different sections ranging from about 1.8m to 3m. There was also seating, a drinking fountain, lighting, a water feature and landscaping.
Council project manager Russell Engelke said the facility was already receiving rave reviews, particularly from club Wakatipu Skateboarders Inc (WSI).
"We can't wait to cut the ribbon on the brand-new Queenstown Gardens skate park and I think there will be some delighted skateboarders out there who will take absolute pleasure in joining us at the official opening."
He said the council wanted to use the opening to acknowledge the driving force of Wakatipu Skateboarders and the many sponsors who added to the council's $310,000 contribution to complete the facility.
WSI spokesman Craig Strong said the reviews had been positive and encouraging.
Queenstown Lakes Mayor Clive Geddes will officiate at the opening, which will include demonstration skateboarding, music, food and free giveaways.
