Traffic delays 'unavoidable'

Increasing construction activity on State Highway 6 near Glenda Dr at Frankton means traffic delays will be ''unavoidable''.

The New Zealand Transport Agency advises motorists using the stretch of highway between Queenstown and Arrowtown to factor in extra travel time to compensate for delays while a new roundabout and roading is constructed.

The $7.5 million project, to improve access from State Highway 6 to the Glenda Dr industrial area, is jointly funded by the Queenstown Lakes District Council and the agency.

Porter Group Ltd, developer of land on the Frankton Flats, is contributing to the cost of the highway roundabout at Glenda Dr.

An NZTA spokesman said construction activity would increase over the coming weeks as the project got into ''full swing''.

Minor hold-ups for road users were unavoidable even with two-way traffic flows.

A 50kmh speed restriction would remain in place until the project was completed in October.
