If you’re going boating this summer, a ‘what you need to know’ session at Queenstown’s The Crown pub this coming Tuesday will be invaluable.

Coastguard Queenstown, the local Hunting & Fishing store and Fiordland Marine Search & Rescue are presenting a ‘Deep South Boating Refresher’ for anyone, of whatever experience, who intends tackling the region’s lakes, fiords, coasts and open seas.

Local Coastguard volunteer Sarah McGuinness says "boating down here can be spectacular, but the icy water, sudden weather changes and those remote areas with comms black spots can catch even experienced skippers out".

Designed to be very practical, the refresher will include the following content:

● Getting your boat and gear ready for southern conditions;

● How to correctly read local weather patterns;

● How to cope when things go wrong, be it breakdowns or emergencies;

● Comms and safety kits that work when you most need them; and

● Insights on the particular quirks of deep south waters.

Hunting & Fishing will also provide spot prizes and special deals on the night.

The session, from 7 till 9.30pm, costs $15 — visit shorturl.fm/B0s5B scoop@scene.co.nz
