This upper portion of Queenstown Mall has been fenced off following a "significant water leak" which damaged the street surface.

A council spokesperson said its contractors identified a failure in the water main on Monday night at the Camp St end "and worked to ensure affected premises regained water supply as quickly as possible".

Naoya Higuchi, owner of upstairs Japanese restaurant Kappa, said he closed early on Monday night, then did not trade at all on Tuesday as access off the mall was difficult, even though his water came back on about 3pm.

Kappa resumed trading on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the council spokesperson said "we expect a full repair to require around 45 metres of water main to be replaced over the next few days, followed by a full reinstatement of the street
surface".

"We’ll continue to update local businesses and the wider community as this progresses."
