Members of the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade had to coax a man from his vehicle after it got stuck in the Arrow River yesterday morning.

Sergeant Blair Duffy, of Queenstown, said the car ended up ''nose deep'' in the water.

The only occupant, a 24-year-old Arrowtown man, was taken to Queenstown Police Station to be processed for breath alcohol level.

Sgt Duffy confirmed the water reached window level and the vehicle was stuck in a hole in the river bed.

While Sgt Duffy could not confirm the details, it is understood the man was trying to cross the river.

Arrowtown Station Officer Nathan Clark told the Otago Daily Times at the scene two appliances and nine crew attended the incident just before 11am.

''We coaxed the man out of the vehicle to check if he was OK and that he had no injuries.''

The vehicle, a red Holden, was winched from the river and towed to the bank.

Station Officer Clark said the operation took about an hour to complete.
