Drink-drive readings ‘moderately high’

Another weekend in the Wakatipu, three more drink-drivers caught.

Sergeant Mark Gill, of Queenstown, said the three people charged with drink-driving, all on Saturday, gave "moderately high" breath-alcohol results.

Two of them were also speeding and driving in a way that put other motorists at risk, Sgt Gill said.

The highest level (910mcg) was recorded by a 34-year-old Invercargill man, who was stopped in the Kawarau Gorge after motorists reported him continually crossing the centre line and overtaking on double yellow lines.

He is due to appear in the Queenstown District Court next Monday.

An arrest warrant was issued for a Kelvin Heights man yesterday when he failed to appear in court to answer his drink-driving charge.

The 23-year-old Canadian builder recorded 703mcg after he was stopped by police in Frankton Rd for speeding.

His licence was automatically suspended for 28 days because of the high reading.

Finally, a 30-year-old Frenchwoman recorded 654mcg after she was stopped in Beach St. The woman, who is living in the resort on a work visa, also had her licence suspended immediately.
