Easter comes early for older residents

The Easter bunny came early for Queenstown’s older residents this week.

The Te Hau Toka Southern Lakes Wellbeing Group partnered with the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Summerdaze event to deliver Easter hampers to individuals and rest-homes in the Wakatipu, with musical entertainment on delivery.

Head bunny and organiser of the "Easter picnic at home" Lisa Gear said the aim was to make older people feel important.

"We do care about them," Ms Gear said.

"We know that they have struggled over these two years, and the community are behind them hoping things are going well and that we’re going to get through this soon."

Summerdaze co-ordinator Mary Wei said the Easter picnic fell under the Summerdaze umbrella which was a council imitative to connect communities and enhance community wellbeing.

Earlier in the month, Ms Gear and Ms Wei had asked for nominations for older people who should receive Easter hampers at home.

They received 120 nominations.

On Monday, work started putting together that number of hampers, which included handmade placemats, Easter chocolate, picnic food from Fresh Choice, handwritten cards from Queenstown and Arrowtown Primary School pupils and vouchers for leisure activities at the Queenstown Events Centre.
