A floating sauna experience, currently under construction for Frankton Arm’s Queenstown Marina, has already been shortlisted for an architecture award.

Located on a floating pontoon, Thermae by Aluume — due to open in August — is a sister attraction to hot pools venture Bathe by Aluume, which opened next to Queenstown Mini Golf last November.

Both businesses are the brainchild of Australian entrepreneur Tim McMahon.

Thermae by Aluume comprises three electrically-powered saunas — a private sauna accommodating up to six guests and two communal saunas with 10-person and four-person capacities.

Each sauna’s paired with immediate cold immersion into Lake Whakatipu.

The curvature of the floating structure’s inspired by the Remarkables mountain range, and framed view apertures and sculptural forms also connect with the mountains.

Designed like its sister operation by Queenstown’s Hyndman Taylor, the project has already been shortlisted for the Southern Architecture Awards.

Aluume Wellness GM Jay Errington says "we have seen great success with the launch of Bathe into the wellness space here in Queenstown, and now with that established presence we are thrilled to move into the next phase of expansion of the Aluume Wellness brand".
