Happiness House is running a free cooking programme for Queenstowners keen to become handier in the kitchen.

The Community Kitchen programme will teach up to 10 people in two-hour sessions, every fortnight, for six months.

Instructed by Crowne Plaza executive chef and food sustainability advocate Alvaro Briones, they’ll learn to cook simple, affordable, seasonal meals before sharing their kai at the end.

They’ll also get tips on how to reduce food waste and cook on a budget.

Happiness House coordinator Steph Burbidge says it’s the first time it’s offered the programme, which is designed for people who don’t usually cook, or who’d like to build their confidence in the kitchen.

Some of the community support centre’s food parcel recipients, and participants in its regular ‘Cook Around the World’ sessions — a cultural exchange based on food — either weren’t taught to cook while growing up, or simply lack confidence in their basic skills and knowledge, Burbidge says.

"A lot of people really want to learn, but there’s not a space for them to do that."

Starting this coming Tuesday, the sessions will take place in Happiness House’s own kitchen, with all food and equipment provided.

The programme’s long duration will allow participants to practise their new skills until they feel natural, and try different seasonal ingredients, she says.

They’re expected to commit themselves to the programme and attend every session.

"I think the community really needs this, and if it goes well, we’re very keen to continue doing it."

There are still a few spots left, she adds.
