A car in Queenstown made a break from a crowded car park yesterday, ending up in the middle of the resort's Rec Ground.

The copper-coloured car came to rest on the rugby pitch, down the bank from a Queenstown Lakes District Council car park near Robins Rd.

The car is pictured being inspected by Constable James Maloney.

Clare Hitchin, who was on her way to work at the time, told the Otago Daily Times she heard a noise that sounded like a chain breaking behind her, before she saw the car taking off down the slight hill, about 8.30am.

''It was having a run down the Rec Ground. It just rolled down the hill and sat there.

''I thought 'it isn't supposed to be doing that'- then I realised there was no-one in it.''

She thought it was odd, so she called the council to report it.

QLDC spokesman Jimmy Sygrove said the council was aware of the incident.

''It appears the chain snapped as the car went through it after its handbrake failed.''

A police media spokeswoman said no charges would be laid, as no offence was committed.
