No-one was injured in a garage fire in the Queenstown suburb of Lake Hayes Estate in the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews from Arrowtown, Frankton and Queenstown were called to Rere Road at 3.05am this morning.

They Arrowtown crew were on the scene within 13 minutes.

Andrew Norris, shift manager at Fire Emergency New Zealand Southern Communication Centre, said: "It started off as a car fire and spread to the garage and the house.''

Mr Norris said on arrival the fire was "well involved''.

"The car and garage have suffered extensive damage. Part of the roof was pulled down to extinguish it properly.''

St John ambulance did not attend.

"There were no injuries,'' Mr Norris said.

About 20 volunteer firefighters were involved in fighting the fire. It was extinguished and they were able to leave the scene shortly before 5am. A police officer remains on scene guarding the property.

Fenz fire investigator Mark Bredenbeck, of Dunedin, is travelling to Queenstown to investigate the cause.

"The fire is not being treated as suspicious but we're yet to determine the cause,'' Mr Norris said.
