The Temuka Swimming Club are searching for a learn to swim coach for their Tuesday and Thursday evening classes.
The volunteer that filled the role — which would run for the four weeks before Christmas and the six weeks after — would keep the vital programme running.
"There are people who can fill in, so if any potential volunteer thinks ‘well, I've got two weeks there that I can't do’ that there is some flexibility," club spokeswoman Sarah Young said
"We have people around that have done it in the past that are like, ‘look, I can't commit fully, but you know. I can do most’.
"It's the same thing, like if kids get sick or if something comes up at work, they just flick it up on the group chat and someone else does it.
"The club do put people that are willing and wanting to do it through some training."
The club had been well supported by volunteers over the years including by Marty Pow who died in June.
She said Mrs Pow — who had been named a life member — had been "the heart and soul" of their group.
Mrs Pow had been with the Temuka club for over 35 years, retiring last year.
"When Marty retired from coaching it took four of us to replace her.
"She still came to coach in Temuka and Mackenzie popping in to share her knowledge and make sure we were on the right track.
"We renamed our club carnival in her honour, I'm forever grateful she got to celebrate this change with us. "
She said Mrs Pow never stopped looking for new coaching drills or tips.
"She remembered specific times, events and stroke styles, but — most of all — she remembered what made a kid tick."
For anyone wanting to volunteer for the learn to swim role, they could email temukaswimmingclub@gmail.com. Registrations for young swimmers will open in mid-October.
