Eights team unable to retain trophy

The South Canterbury ladies eights team went to Ashburton on Sunday to play the triangular fixture against Ashburton and Canterbury.

Unfortunately, they were unable to retain the Daley Trophy, which was won by Canterbury with 39 points.

South Canterbury got 24 points and Ashburton finished with 21 points.

Two rounds of fours, pairs and singles were played. South Canterbury’s most successful discipline was in the singles, where they picked up 15 of their points.

Several players were also playing in the Ashburton Open Championship pairs on Saturday.

Debra Ruffell and Derek Cooper played steady bowls all day to make the final, but went down to the Ashburton combination of Michael Lawson and Taylor Mackenzie.

On Saturday a drawn three bowls triples tournament will be held at the Timaru Indoor Bowls Stadium commencing at 1.30pm.

There is another trip to Ashburton on Sunday to play for the Hight Trophy.

Four teams of four players have been selected as follows: R Wood, D Ruffell, J Blissett and C Hickey; K Anngow, J Lockyer, A Reid and D Warwood; D Cooper, D Mealings, C Cooper and AM Blissett; A Gibson, C Dawson, D Shand and M Higgins.

Then on Wednesday May 6, the Calder Shield, which is also against Ashburton, is being played in Timaru and those teams are: S Austin, A Coles, K Lockyer and G White; L Brown, D Fowler, Q Sullivan and E Duffield; B Black, S Taylor, G Harris and A Mackie; A Jenks, L Gibson, J Briggs and J Dawson. — Carol Dawson
